Robotic Colorectal Surgery
Providing High Quality Care Through Precision Surgery

What Is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgery is a state of the art surgical platform. It is a form of minimally invasive surgery (key-hole surgery). It consists of two main components;
1) a robotic console for Dr Kong to sit on and this allows him to control the robotic camera and all instruments
2) the patient cart that is positioned over the patient as it holds the camera and instruments that Dr Kong controls
Therefore, small incisions are made to insert the camera and instruments. Dr Kong then used hand and foot controls to manipulate the camera and miniature instruments deep inside the patient’s body, allowing extremely precise and delicate surgery to be performed.
What Are The Unique Features of Robotic Surgery?
There are three unique features to robotic surgery (compared to laparoscopic surgery):
i) A stable robotic platform eliminating any fine tremors and therefore increasing surgical precision
ii) 3-D high definition views giving a crystal clear view of the surgical area that is magnified 10 times
iii) articulated instruments replicating a surgeon's wrist with full range of motion
Robotic surgery is particularly useful for rectal (benign or cancer) surgery because of the tight angles in the pelvic cavity. Furthermore, it allows Dr Kong to be very precise with the added advantage of being able to identify and preserve important structures including artery, vein and pelvic nerves that supply the bladder, bowel and sexual function.

What Are The Advantages of Robotic Surgery?
Due to the improve in surgical precision, patients can expect:
-
Faster patient recovery including early mobility
-
Less pain
-
Less blood loss and scarring
-
Lower complication profile
